Cleaned white UPVC fascia, soffit and guttering on a house in Tilehurst, Reading

Fascia, Soffit & Gutter Exterior Cleaning in Reading

Soft-brush washing of the visible outside surfaces — fascia boards, soffits, the outer face of the guttering, downpipes and trims — across Reading and Berkshire. Purified water and water-fed poles as standard, with cleaning solution used only where the staining needs it.

This page covers exterior washing of guttering, fascias and soffits. If your gutters are blocked or overflowing and need clearing out from the inside, that is a separate job — see gutter clearing in Reading. For the glass itself, see window cleaning in Reading, and for discoloured window frames, doors and sills see UPVC frame and sill cleaning.

    What Gets Cleaned

An exterior clean covers the whole visible roofline, not just the front boards, so the finished elevation looks even rather than patched.

    Fascia boards

The boards running along the roof edge that the guttering is fixed to. These take the worst of the weather streaking and are usually the reason the job is booked.

    Soffits

The panels tucked underneath the fascia, including vented soffits, where cobwebs, dust and algae collect out of the rain.

    Gutter exteriors

The visible outer face and underside of the guttering — the black tiger-striping washed down from the roof. This is external washing, not clearing the inside.

    Downpipes

The full run of each downpipe, plus the brackets and the wall line behind them where dirt gathers.

    Barge boards and trims

Gable-end barge boards, bargecaps, cladding panels and decorative exterior trims where they can be safely reached.

    Porch and canopy trims

Porch ceilings, garage trims and the underside of UPVC canopies where access allows.

    Common Staining on Reading Rooflines

Almost all of it is surface staining. That is why cleaning restores most boards rather than replacing them being the only option.

    • Green algae, most often on north-facing and shaded elevations that stay damp.
    • Black weather streaking below the gutter line, washed down off the roof over years.
    • Tiger striping along the outer face of the guttering — dirt carried in rainwater running over the lip.
    • Dust, road film and general environmental grime on soffits and trims.
    • Cobwebs, insect debris and nesting material tucked into vented soffits.
    • Dull, chalky oxidisation on older UPVC from long-term UV exposure.

    The Cleaning Process

Every property is assessed before a method is agreed, and the same person carries out the work.

    1. Inspection and quotation

The elevations are walked and the boards, soffits, gutter line and access are checked. Cracked boards, missing capping, loose sections or timber that has deteriorated are pointed out before anything begins — those are reported, not repaired.

    2. Access assessment

Most fascia and soffit cleaning is done from the ground using a water-fed pole. Where a section cannot be reached safely or the surface is not suitable for washing, you are told at the quotation stage rather than after.

    3. Preparation and protection

Planting, furniture and anything directly below the working line is protected or moved where practical, and windows and doors are checked before water goes up.

    4. Soft brushing with purified water

A soft brush head on a water-fed pole works along the fascia, soffit, gutter face and downpipes. Purified water alone is enough for a large number of jobs.

    5. Cleaning solution only where the staining needs it

Where algae or heavy weather marking will not lift with water alone, a UPVC-suitable cleaning solution is applied and given time to work, rather than raising the pressure.

    6. Rinse and final check

Everything is rinsed down with purified water so it dries without spotting, the area below is cleared, and the finished elevation is walked with you or reported back.

    Suitable Properties & Materials

Suitability is confirmed on inspection. Where a board or elevation should not be washed, you are told before the work is booked.

    UPVC fascia, soffit and guttering

The most common material on homes across Reading, and what this service is built around. Surface staining almost always cleans off without replacement.

    UPVC cladding and trims

Cladding panels, barge boards and decorative trims, cleaned with the same soft-brush method.

    Painted timber — assessed first

Older timber boards are checked before quoting. Flaking paint, soft or rotten timber and failing joints are not safe to wash, and are reported instead.

    Aluminium and composite boards

Cleaned where the surface and any coating are sound. Suitability is confirmed on inspection.

    Houses, bungalows and flats

Detached, semi-detached, terraced and bungalow properties, plus accessible elevations on low-rise flats.

    Commercial premises

Small offices, shops, schools and similar premises where the fascia line can be reached safely from the ground.
